It contains a quest, a prophecy (rhyming, of course), and a motley assortment of characters to help the hero on his way. ReviewĪt first glance, Gregor the Overlander might seem indistinguishable from many other middle grade fantasies. Gregor initially wants nothing more than to return his sister safely home, but soon realizes that playing alone with the prophecy may be the only way to discover the truth about his father. The humans believe Gregor to be the warrior named in an ancient prophecy, one who can either destroy their world or save it, and they look to him for answers as their society heads ever closer to war. The two find adventure, however, when they fall through a grate in the laundry room into the Underland, where humans live uneasily alongside giant roaches, rats, bats, and spiders. Instead, he has to stay home to care for his grandmother and his baby sister Boots. His father disappeared years ago and his mother, though she works hard, cannot afford to send him to summer camp. Eleven-year-old Gregor expects to have little fun over summer break. It is the influence of Poe, however, that is most in evidence in the character of Holmes and in many of his plots. Doyle records that he was familiar with Mémoires (1828-1829 Memoirs of Vidocq, Principal Agent of the French Police, 1828-1829) and had read Gaboriau’s Monsieur Lecoq (1880). Regardless of the disclaimers and acknowledgments, there is little doubt that Doyle owed a large debt to Edgar Allan Poe and other predecessors in detective fiction, such as Émile Gaboriau and François-Eugène Vidocq. Bell, however, disclaimed the honor and suggested that Doyle himself possessed the analytical acumen that more closely resembled the skills of Sherlock Holmes. Joseph Bell, a teacher of anatomy at the University of Edinburgh, whose diagnostic skills he had admired as a student of medicine. Sherlock Holmes, as the prototype of almost all fictional detectives, has become a legend not only to his devotees but also to those who have not even read the works in which he appears, the detective being immortalized by reputation and through the media of movies, television, and radio.ĭoyle claimed that the character of Sherlock Holmes was based on his memories of Dr. In spite of his desire to be acknowledged as a writer of “serious” literature, Arthur Conan Doyle ( – 7 July 1930) is destined to be remembered as the creator of a fictional character who has taken on a life separate from the literary works in which he appears. This is an elegant entry in our fiction section which you will enjoy reading. I’ve read a lot of this author’s books and enjoyed them, but I can honestly say this one was a waste of my time and a precious credit. It just made easy targets of vegans and made a false depiction of what psychologists actually do. There was a lot of negative stereotypes about both vegan food and psychologists in the book which I found unnecessary and cliche (I’m neither a psychologist or a vegan by the way) with the usual references to ‘rabbit food’ and being constantly ‘psychoanalysed’ being boring, predictable and unnecessary, without any meaningful addition to the story. The depiction of Steph’s parents as patronising, vegan psychologists was a bit lame as well. The usual, ‘Someone died and it’s all my fault’ theme when in actuality the death wasn’t even remotely her fault. Ray’s ‘emotional trauma’ was self indulgent, predictable and boring. Parts of the book dragged on without anything really happening. The concept of the story is okay, but it’s delivery was pretty dull to be honest. |
